Fairies Help Fight Breast Cancer

IRMO - Thirty-five-year-old Toni Kelly started a handcrafted doll business 2-and-a-half years ago. But in June, the product changed. That's when Kelly was diagnosed with breat cancer.

"Even before the surgery, I started making these breast cancer awareness fairies," said Kelly. "You know, I could just sit down and be creative and kind of let that be an outlet for me."

Before she knew it, her fairies had filled her home office. That's when a friend made a suggestion: Mammogram reminder boxes. Inside you'll find a fairy. Kelly created them in all shapes and sizes, just like those affected by breast cancer. Plus, each one holds a symbolic pink ribbon. Kelly also included a paper that tells her story and a poem: "I must keep moving or my work will never get done. I'll keep on going 'til the war on cancer is won."

The idea is that a friend will give you the box as a mammogram reminder and then you'll pass it on to someone else. But Kelly hopes one item in the box will eventually return to her. It's a journal that she asks each recipient to sign.

"That will be my payoff," she said. "Just to feel like I reached so many."
